The Harlem Independent Living Center develops linkages within the community to encourage referrals and to ensure consumers of Center services are appropriately served in the community.
Current activities include:
Meeting with the Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (CBVH), the New York State Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID), (VESID is now ACCES-VR), and the New York State Department of Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) to brainstorm collaborative efforts and outreach methods.
Service on a variety of boards, which impact persons with disabilities.
- Participation in the successful transitioning of people with disabilities from the public benefits sector to obtaining gainful employment or Social Security benefits.
- Assistance in outreach for disabled individuals affected by terrorist acts or other tragic occurrences.
- Maintenance of collaborations with national disability-oriented organizations to promote the increase of employment options and opportunities for persons with disabilities.
- Active research for proposals for grant opportunities related to disability-oriented organizations.
