The Harlem Independent Living Center develops linkages within the community to encourage referrals and to ensure consumers of Center services are appropriately served in the community.
Current activities include:
Meeting with the Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (CBVH), the New York State Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID), and the New York State Department of Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) to brainstorm collaborative efforts and outreach methods.
Service on a variety of boards, which impact persons with disabilities.
- Participation in the successful transitioning of people with disabilities from the public benefits sector to obtaining gainful employment or Social Security benefits.
- Assistance in outreach for disabled individuals affected by terrorist acts or other tragic occurrences.
- Maintenance of collaborations with national disability-oriented organizations to promote the increase of employment options and opportunities for persons with disabilities.
- Active research for proposals for grant opportunities related to disability-oriented organizations.
